The first is a legal adage that gives priority to logical thinking over thoughtless memorization. The second – a paremia derived from Roman law – valid to this day.

We know that a comprehensive knowledge of the law is essential in the lawyer’s work, therefore we follow changes in the law on an ongoing basis. However we also know that the knowledge of legal provisions without their correct understanding and the ability to apply them in practice is far from sufficient.
